Sowing Bountifully by Bufe Karraker on 6/26/88

December 7th, 2017

1988 was a strange time according to Bufe.  There was a mixture of God and greed during that time.  TV Preachers were taking advantage of asking for money.  But because of being afraid of falling into the money trap, preachers ended up falling into the silent trap.  Bufe talks about Abraham and Lot and Melchizedek and Jacob and the stairway to Heaven back before the days of the Law.  Abraham and Jacob came up with the 10% tithe to the Lord.  There is no mention of the tithe before that.  But after Moses, God commands the people to give 10% of their income to God.  Bufe talks about the tribe of Levi and how God took care of them thru the tithe.  Bufe talks about the additional tithes for festivals, etc.  Total was around 25% of their money going to the Lord on a regular basis.  There was also special projects and special giving.  Those were love offerings.  Tithes were required.  The tithe belonged to the Lord.  Free-will offerings were optional.  The tithe was not a matter of your heart.  It was an obligation to the Lord.  Bufe shares that for years he had been giving 25% plus more to the Lord.  Did Jesus do away with the law of tithing?  Jesus did not come to cancel the law, but to fulfil the laws.  Jesus did away with the sacrifices, not the tithe.  No where in the New Testament do we read that the tithe is over.  It was there before the Law and it is still there.  Today it is the demonstration of Great Joy.

Summer Plans by Bufe Karraker on 6/26/94

December 6th, 2017

Four things Bufe wanted for his congregation during the summer.  1. Adventure. 2. Rest and Relaxation.  3. Increase Biblical knowledge to become more effective in sharing the gospel.  Bufe mentions the book by Carman, 'Raising the Standard'.  4. Find a special place of service somewhere this summer.

How Are You Doing? by Bufe Karraker on 10/6/91

December 5th, 2017

Bufe had been preaching a series on special people in the Bible and summarizes them at the beginning of this message.  He then talked about us.  How are we doing with how Jesus told us we were supposed to live?  One day, as believers, we will stand before Jesus and judged by how we lived as God's children.  Do you wander in darkness even though you are a believer?  Have you lost your flavor in the world?  We are the world's light sitting on a hill.  Don't hide your light!

We are God’s Temple by Bufe Karraker on 9/24/94

December 4th, 2017

Bufe talks about John the Baptist who was the forerunner of Jesus Christ.  John the Baptizer knew who Jesus was.  He was the Lamb of God.  He was the Messiah.  Bufe talks about Andrew, Peter, Philip and Nathaniel and how they were each sharing Jesus with the others.  Come and see!  Bufe also talks about Jacob in Genesis.  Those of us with Christ in our lives, He lives in us.  God lives in our bodies.  We are to honor Him with our bodies.  Every place we take Jesus should become a special place.  That should affect our behavior.

John 1, Genesis 28, 2 Corinthians 6

Prelude to Power by Bufe Karraker on 11/6/88

December 3rd, 2017

Bufe was constantly looking forward, reaching out to others, sharing the gospel.  He was always encouraging his congregation to do the same.  Northwest church was about to celebrate their 20 year anniversary.  Bufe cautiioned the church about becoming lazy and content and not sharing the gospel with others any more.  Are you fulfilling the reason for your existence as a child of God?  Bufe talks about the early disciples witnessing the ascension of Christ and the difference that made in their lives.  We read that so easily and lose the impact of that event on the disciples.  Jesus left and He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in those disciples to give them power to share the gospel.  As believers today, we have the Holy Spirit and the same power.  Bufe points out a prelude to power is obedience.  Also a devotion to prayer is a prelude to power.  A desire for unity is another prelude to power.  Bufe shares a story about Admiral Phipps and the English and the French fighting over Quebec.

And the Earth Shook by Bufe Karraker on 10/22/89

December 2nd, 2017

Bufe mentions the recent news and sudden, violent events at that time.  It was the Loma Prieta Earthquake in San Francisco area a few days before on October 18, 1989.  Bufe encourages us to look at eternal things more than temporal things.  Bufe urges us to come to the Lord 'just as we are.'  He tells the story of the wise man building his house on the Rock.  Bufe asks important questions at the end of the message.

Second Birth and the 4 Disciplines by Bufe Karraker on 11/5/89

December 1st, 2017

The wonder of the whole process of new birth!  Bufe never witnessed childbirth in his lifetime, but he witnessed second birth, being born again, several times.  There should be a dramatic change when a person is born again.  Bufe talks about what it's like when a baby is born and compares it to when a person has a second birth and becomes a child of God.   A new baby is vulnerable and so is a new-born person in Christ.  Bufe talks about the role of the Holy Spirit in a new born-again Christian's life.  Bufe talks about the 4 disciplines that were set up in the early Christian church that helped the Church stay alive.  1. Devote yourself to the Teaching of the Word. 2. Devote yourself to Prayer. 3. Devote yourself to Fellowship with other believers.  4. Devote yourself to Communion Services.  Bufe's church had a special Communion Service on Thanksgiving Eve.

Excitement over the Resurrection by Bufe Karraker on 3/27/88

November 30th, 2017

Even with a bad cold, Bufe preached a strong message with a strong voice.  He had been teaching recently about what happened after the resurrection.  Jesus wanted people to tell other people about the resurrection.  Most Christians fall down in the area of witnessing and giving.  Most Christians don't even give 10% of what they make to God.  Bufe asks "How would you like to spend eternity on 10% of what you make?"  The fear that keeps us from witnessing and giving revolves around the fear of what it will cost us.  Jesus announces his complete authority in Matthew 28.  Have you given Jesus complete authority over your life?  He commands us, all believers, to share the good news of His resurrection.  We are to make disciples of those who believe, teaching them to keep His commands.  Jesus gave us the assurance that He would be with us always.

Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 6, John 18-19

Peace of Heart and Mind by Bufe Karraker on 4/12/92

November 29th, 2017

This was Palm Sunday. How much does Palm Sunday mean to you? The crowd that gathered around Jesus was more interested in the material than the spiritual. Jesus rode in on a donkey. What was the message he was giving to the crowd? Are we as guilty of having false expectations of what Jesus will do for us? Jesus came with a gift, a gift of peace of heart and mind. Bufe shares a story of a woman facing death who knew that peace of God.

Attitudes Toward the Poor by Bufe Karraker on 11/17/85

November 28th, 2017

Love is the willingness to surrender that which has value for your own life to enrich another’s life. You have to first see another person’s need. Bufe points out how it makes more sense sometimes to support Christian natives in the country instead of sending more missionaries to the country. Interesting point. Bufe talks about us being givers of God’s love to others. Is love really functioning through you to others?
